The creative Void, and the adventurers of Brazilian furniture
Pacard - Brazilian Furniture Designer since 1974, Teacher, Consultant*
Creating and innovating is not for bad people. It's not for the faint of heart. It's crazy. It is for unhappy people, discontented people, people with ants in their underwear, with animals on their entire bodies (some say "carpenter animals"). No carpenter: Joiner. And the good ones!
Understanding innovation is not for mediocre people. It is not for people with accommodated neurons. It is not for people unable to differentiate beige from yellow, nor purple from lilac. It is not for people with a small horizon and finite soul.
Innovating is for those who realize that the limit is already creating slime and sameness has already filled with mold. Innovating is for those who know that the world revolves, even if they don't realize it. Whoever looks at the ground, only sees his feet sinking into the earth, but the innovator looks upwards, in all directions, and sees that the sun does not stay at the same point during the hours of the day. It is the innovators who perceive that the world revolves, and do not do like the flowers and leaves, which always aim at the sunlight. The innovator does not wait for the sun to turn his face. He turns on a lamp and directs the light wherever he looks.
Brazilian furniture has not innovated its face since the construction of Brasília, and rather said, since the arrival of Cabral. Brazilian furniture is only Brazilian when it looks like Brazil, and the face of Brazil is not just the face of an Indian, the face of round wood, the face of bamboo. Brazilian furniture borrows the colors of the world, the shapes of the people, and the role of the accommodated.
Brazilian furniture is ashamed of itself. She is ashamed to hit her and show her body. She is ashamed to be beautiful, sensual, happy, and necessary.
Brazilian furniture is a harlot that supports gigolos from old world design. It is selective and stupid, because it sucks in culture that it does not know. The Brazilian furniture industry and its mentors, act as monkeys that imitate others, and in this case, the others, are the ones that repeat lines, curves, colors, and shapes and fill, with voids, spaces full of nothing. And the Brazilians say: "Top!"
Brazilian furniture is poor, even though its products are made for the rich, and the furniture of the poor, is the result of what was left over from the design reuse of a decade ago, because the big manufacturers are not at risk of making mistakes. Therefore, they are not innovative, they are spreadsheet typists and button presses for robotic machines, those that scratch, cut and drill, sheets of hardened gum, to manufacture colored boxes, which they call furniture, and think that this is design, and think that this is Brazilian.
The furniture adventurers are not the ones who produce the utility boxes for consumers, but those who benefit from a certain wave, a certain economic movement and a certain trend, and immerse themselves in the production of that, until another wave comes and changes everything, but they don't change, because only those who knew how to start can change. They simply shipwreck, and the remains appear floating in the abandoned pavilions surrounded by weeds (before weeds were, as it is empty capoeira), full of expired titles and judicial pending due to fraudulent wages or deviated taxes, and remain, like monkeys, jumping from a branch on a branch, eating chepa bananas (fruits at the end of the fair), and complaining about the government, the employees, the unions, the vaccine they don't accept, the bumpy streets, and they come home to stumble in the living corners of the cupboards, and to sit on the lame chairs, because they didn't even know how to copy them.
Brazilian Design is in its moment of creative emptiness, and manufacturers are afraid to dare, as there is a crisis outside, without realizing that there is an even worse crisis, inside, of their empty minds and hopes buried in the past that they thought were entrepreneurs and innovators. They were not, and never will be.
There is a creative void, despite constantly hearing that creativity is the great urgency for them to survive.
There are voids within voids. A void filled with other voids, as someone said. (Okay, I said that, in the little book below. Click to buy).
